Melody: Always with me – Myazaki’s Spirited Away

Personalized wooden box, engraved with the image ‘Spirited Away’ and just a tap to hear the musical sounds. Every summer, Hayao Miyazaki spent his vacations in a mountain hut with his family and five daughters who were family friends. The idea for Spirited Away came when he wanted to make a movie about these friends.

Spirited Away is the 12th animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, and premiered in theaters in Japan on July 20, 2001.
The story follows the adventures of a young ten-year-old girl named Chihiro as she wanders the world of gods and spirits. She is forced to work in a bath after her parents are turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba.

The film was made to please the ten-year-old daughter of Hayao Miyazaki’s personal friend, director Seiji Okuda. Okuda’s daughter even became the model for the film’s protagonist, Chihiro. During the planning stage of the film, Miyazaki gathered the girls of the Ghibli staff at a mountain hut in Shinano Province to hold a training workshop. His experience made him want to make a film about them, as he had never made a film about girls at the age of 10.
